Stepping Into GTD- Part 4: What Should I Be Doing?
It is one of the great questions in GTD: What should I be doing right now? You now have control of your inputs, the ability to process your inputs to determine what do next, and expert filing skills and yet none of that actually tells you what item from your To Do list you should actually be working on at any given time. The answer to that great question requires some understanding of who you are at work and at home. Don’t worry, in this week’s article I am going to help you develop a personal compass to steer you through the maze of your To Do list.
1 commentWeekend Wrapup- 10Dec2007
Hello again. Xmas is in full swing at DNAphil’s house, as the tree went up and Mrs. DNAphil baked her famous Xmas cookies. Last night, I played my last session for 2007, as Spenser ran his True 20 Dresden campaign. The session went well, and it was my first serious True 20 combat. I have learned the importance of Conviction points in True 20, as I nearly got killed on the first attack, but managed to re-roll my damage save and turn that into just a wound.
This week the Wednesday blog will be Part 4 of the Simple GTD series, talking about Priorities and Weekly Reviews. This article will talk about how to figure out what you should be doing on your to do lists first, and how to plan your week, so that you are as effective as possible. On Friday, I am going to take a look back at my GMing style 20 years ago and talk about If I knew then what I knew now… Talking about what things I would have done differently as a GM in the 80’s , knowing all that I have learned over the years, on my own and from my fellow GM’s. So please stop by and read up….
No commentsI Heart Mooks
Call them Mooks, or Minions, or Goons, these are the disposable NPCs that heroes blast and cut their way through wholesale. Most RPGs do not have specific rules for handling Mooks, which I think is a big oversight. In this week’s article I am going to discuss what a Mook is, how RPGs should address them in their rules, and what you can do with them in your games.
1 commentStepping Into GTD: Part 3- File This!
This is the third in a series of articles designed to look at how to ease into the GTD system, using some simple tools and the essence of the GTD method. Last week I discussed how to Process your inputs, so that you could quickly make decisions on what to do with the requests that come through your inputs. This week, we are going to talk about how to file the small amount of paperwork that you are now keeping (since you are discarding all the non-essential paper you receive when you are clearing your inputs, and the mess of papers that you were hoarding before you embraced GTD).
The goal of filing is simple: place papers where they are organized and tidy in a way that they can be found quickly when they are needed. It sounds simple, and it is, and yet most people do not file properly. So let’s talk about what it’s going to take to get you filing the correct way….
No commentsWeekend Update- 03Dec2007
Another busy weekend for me. Spent part of the weekend getting all the Xmas stuff out of the attic and the house moved around to make room for the Xmas tree. I also did some painting, to finish up closing off the doorway between my office in the kitchen (not as some move to help me lose weight, but rather to make room for a new dishwasher). Last night also marked my last session of my Iron Heroes campaign for the year. My campaign is officially on Hiatus. I have one more game this Sunday, Spenser’s Dresden campaign, and then my gaming is done for 2007.
I plan on spending my hiatus getting the Mass Combat rules from Fields of Blood working for Iron Heroes and getting my players set up for the war, that has been building up for the past two years of the campaign. I am also going to take this time to start to learn Fractal Mapper by NBOS software. I have been buying versions for the past few years, but never have taken the time to seriously understand the software. Mapping is something that I have always been interested in doing, and I would like to take a shot at really understanding it. That is what hiatus’ are for, after all.
This week, on Wednesday, I will continue my simple GTD series, as I talk about Filing (I promise to make it more exciting than it sounds). On Friday, the RPG article, will be all about Mooks, something that every set of RPG rules should address, and very few do. So please make sure you come around this week, to see what its all about.
