Reading List–Update

Category: Opinion

A few weeks ago, I posted my Reading List for 2008. I have been reading since Christmas and have made some progress on my reading list. So as a way to get back on the writing wagon, I thought I would update you on how my reading list is coming along. So here are the books that I have read so far….

Iron Empires Vol 1: Faith Conquers and Vol 2: Sheva’s War (by Christopher Moeller) — Both of these graphic novels were excellent. The artwork on both were amazing. The stories in both were solid and entertaining. It would be hard for me to say which of these I liked more, but if pressed, I would say that I liked Trevor Faith a bit more, having a soft spot for the Warrior-Priest. The one thing that threw me off was that I forgot how much less plot development occurs in a Graphic Novel vs. a traditional Novel. Again, both stories were excellent but I would have liked them to have kept going longer. I can easily recommend these.

These graphic novels have only fueled my desire to play Burning Empires.

Spook Country (by William Gibson)– I am a huge Gibson fan, and my mini-review of this book will be a bit biased. I enjoyed this book. The story is divided up into several intertwined threads, as was done in several of his other books. The setting is in the present-future, rather than his more noted cyberpunk future. All that said, the story was well crafted, and was topical. As with all Gibson books, the prose is unique and refreshing to read. Gibson has a very unique voice, and if you enjoy it, as I do, its a pleasure to read. The story is not huge and sweeping, but rather a bit smaller than I had originally expected, but the size of the story does not detract from the enjoyment of the book at all.

It is not the first Gibson book I would recommend to new readers, but if you are a fan of Gibson this is an excellent addition to his already impressive body of work.

Currently I am reading…
Thirteen (by Richard K. Morgan)–  I am only 100 pages into it, but I can say that I am already enjoying this book, and Morgan is rapidly rising as one of my favorite authors.  Unlike the Takeshi Trilogy, this book is told through several different characters, and similar to Spook Country, is told through several intertwining story lines.  If you have not read Morgan before, you wont be disappointed.  Read the prologue of this book, and you will have chills down your spine.  I will post more about this book, as I continue to read it….
