How To Get Your GM Groove Back
In December, my gaming group went on a gaming hiatus for the Holidays. We had a brief return for two sessions, in January, and then on January 18th, my daughter was born, putting us on another four week hiatus, while my family and I adjusted to having an infant in the house. For the past four weeks, I have been trying to get as much sleep as I can, helping my wife out, as she has been taking the late nights up feeding our daughter, giving our 3 yr old son as much attention as I can, and settling into a new role at work. What I have not been doing, is much gaming stuff. The blog posts took a dip, my work on RPG’s, in general has been very low. I feel as if my creative spark has gone dormant.
This Sunday the hiatus is over, my gaming group comes back together, as we are going to start a new Cyberpunk 2020 campaign, run by Sargon. The following week, is the return of my Iron Heroes campaign, and to be honest, I am a bit concerned. It’s now been about 8 weeks since I have created any session material, or been behind the screen. Right now I am feeling a bit numb. I know that I have the GM spark in me, but this is the longest I have gone, in the past 10 years, without exercising it. What I need right now, is to wake it and get my GM Groove back. I have been giving it some thought and I have some ideas…

Last week of the gaming haitus. I have been working on a few game related activites, mostly focused on my Iron Heroes game, specifically getting ready for introducing mass combat into my campaign. I have also been working on getting my character ready for Sargon’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2020 game. The first session is this coming Sunday, and it will be a welcome return to gaming, as we have been off for some time.
Our normal holiday haitus was from December into January, and then we returned for two weeks and took off again for four more weeks with the birth of my daughter. So this game will our first serious session since November. It will be nice to get back to gaming again. It’s been long enough that I feel like I need some kind of Gaming jump-start to get fired up again.
I did register for GenCon on Saturday. I am also working with some of the members of my GM-Fu group to develop a new workshop for this year. We are working out the last of the details this week, and will be submitting the event by the weekend.
I am not sure what this weeks posts are going to be on. Off the top of my head, I am thinking that I will do one article about getting back into the gaming frame of mind. Some kind of gamer geek jump-start, or How To Get Your Gaming Groove Back. After that, we will just wing it.

Ahh…February time to start thinking about GenCon. What’s that? GenCon is in August. Why start thinking about it now? Ahh, I see you have not been to GenCon before my friend, and you surely do not know me. August is when you go to GenCon. February is when you start your planning.
Now release that mouse from your ADD like urge to click and seek out more media, and let me talk to you for a few moments about GenCon…

When I was in High School, I use to consume RPG books, the way many young gamers go through booster packs of Magic cards. I would buy any game or supplement that I could find. Back then I had the kind of disposable income as well as ample time to not only read but play most of the games that I bought. Fast forward, nearly 20 years, and my disposable income is much less, and my time is far more scarce. Today, I am very miserly about what games I buy, and I have to be much more deliberate about what games I run. Because of this, I tend to buy very few new games, though I will freely buy supplements for games that I am currently playing.
My time for splurging and buying new games, is at GenCon, every August. Leading up to August, I keep current with reviews and articles from GamingReport, and various blogs, on new games that are coming out. Through the course of the year, I keep a running list of games, that I would like to purchase when I get to GenCon. Right now, the list looks something like this….

Well, another weekend without gaming. My group is still on leave as my family gets adjusted to our newest edition. Things are going well in that department, as we are working on getting Rose into a sleeping schedule and getting my Son, Dante, adjusted to his baby sister.
While I have not been playing any RPG’s, I am still getting some gaming work done. For starters, I have been reading the rules for The Mountain Witch. It’s a very interesting game, a cross between The Seven Samurai and Reservoir Dogs. How can you not love a game like that.
I have also been working on my Iron Heroes campaign building army units for the mass combat we are going to run, using Eden Studio’s Fields of Blood rules. I have a few more units to create for my Demon armies.
I am also working out the details on a GenCon workshop for this year. I am not ready to disclose the full details yet, but I can tell you that I will be working with the Chatty DM this year, as well as some of my fellow GM-Fu members.
I will be writing this week about a few RPG’s that I have my eye on, and later in the week will be writing the first of several GenCon articles, giving advice about getting ready for this year’s GenCon.
So make sure you check in this week, as we are getting back on track here, and getting the articles flowing again.
