Weekend Update– 30jun2008

This past Sunday was the return of my Iron Heroes campaign.  The characters have fast-forwarded in time, gaining 4 levels (from 12 to 16), and on the verge of capturing the capital city of Arion’s home land.  In all the session went OK, but he had a lot of challenges.  The first was that I did not eat before the session, so by 9:30pm, in the middle of a huge combat, my blood sugar reached rock bottom, and I became quite irritable.  Sargon, had hurt his neck and was taking some Rx for it, leaving him a bit off.  That left J and Spenser to hold up the other half of the table.  Add to this, that my NPC’s that I designed were getting housed, bad, it was a rough session.

I have analyzed my underpowered encounter, and have come up with the new baseline stats for what the heroes should be fighting as we enter the final five sessions of the campaign.  In some ways, it was fun to watch the heroes just plaster the NPC’s that I created.  And in truth, they deserved to.  The final story arc is the largest one, and will be the hardest thing I have had to write.  So for one night, they got to unveil their new powers, roll a ton of dice, and revel in the fact that the NPC’s did not stand a chance.   They will not get another fight so unbalanced again…I promise that.

I also started writing my sections of the GenCon workshop that I am working on with the GM-Fu Masters.  I should be done with my parts over the next two weeks, leaving ample time for editing, layout, and getting the book to the printers.  Philippe, the Chatty DM, has been hard at work soliciting some freebies from some game manufactures, so that we can have some giveaways at the Workshop.

Tonight we are getting a little D&D game going, to test out some new character builds.  Arioch has dumped his Paladin and moved up to a Half-Elf Warlock.  Personally, I did not know how he was not going to play the Warlock, just like I was not going to play the Warlord, when I first got the books.  On that front, I am fully enjoying my Warlord.

This Sunday, is the kickoff of Sargon’s Star Wars SAGA game.  I am very psyched. He is using the WoTC published adventures, that take placed during the birth of the Rebellion.  I am playing a Zabrak Padwan, who has been hiding out since Order 66 came down.  I like the character I came up with, though I may do a little tweaking of his Force powers before I finish the final build, on Saturday.

Boy, for most people, Summer is when their gaming slows down.  For me, it looks like its speeding up.

As for this week, I am going to get an article together tomorrow on GenCon prep, this time budgeting for the trip, and how to survive on the cheep.  I am not sure if I will be able to get a Gnome Stew article together yet, but I have an idea on the “Buddy GM” that I am kicking around.

See you later this week.
